Police brutality in America: Mubarak Soulemane, 19, who suffered from schizophrenia, was fatally shot by State Police Trooper Brian North on January 15, 2020. Investigators say the teen allegedly carjacked a vehicle in Norwalk, which led police on a car chase into West Haven. The family Attorney Mark Arons says that Soulemane had a knife in his possession, but that it was with him inside of the car when he was shot.

“I want the police officer to be held accountable for killing my son,” Omo Mohammed, Mubarak’s mother says. “If this trooper had taken a minute, two minutes — he would know he was not dealing with a criminal.” His family continues to fight for justice as the investigation into what happened remains ongoing. Mohammed says she's calling for an end to police brutality.  

"Mubarak was fully isolated and contained within the vehicle so he posed no harm to anyone," said Attorney Arons. “There hasn’t been a case like this in Connecticut for a long time, where it’s clear in our view that Mubarak was murdered by a state trooper. This case has been pending now for a year — the family has been exceptionally patient. We are seeking to sue the state of Connecticut for $10 million.” 

The Middlesex State’s Attorney, who was assigned to conduct the investigation and determine if the use of force was justified under state law, also released a statement. He expressed his condolences to the family and wrote, “While we are striving to complete the investigation as quickly as possible, our primary goal is to ensure that the investigation is thorough and complete.”

The family says this was an unjustified shooting and they have a claim pending with the state's Claims Commission seeking $10 million. The family is also seeking criminal charges against the state trooper.

“A loving, caring, very touching, ambitious. That’s my son.” Stated Mubarak’s mother. “He had dreams to have several kids. He had dreams to go far into national business and his ambition extended as far as him getting into his first-choice college,” Mariyann Soulemane, Mubarak’s sister.
